With the rise of new vinyl products being introduced into the market, it can be hard to figure out which type of floor is best for your project. Traditional luxury vinyl plank flooring has been the choice of consumers for years, but products such as SPC vinyl are making waves in the industry. If you're torn between traditional LVT vs SPC vinyl, this comparison will walk you through the key differences between the floors.

A traditional LVT and SPC vinyl are going to have the most differences due to the construction of each plank. A vinyl floor has a simple PVC core that makes it flexible and soft. The SPC vinyl planks have a core made of a stone plastic composite, which gives it a rigid construction and less pliable feel.

The internal structure of LVT flooring generally includes UV paint layer, wear-resistant layer, color film layer and LVT medium base layer. Generally, the medium base layer is composed of three layers of LVT. In order to improve the dimensional stability of the floor, customers will require the factory to add glass fiber mesh in the substrate layer to reduce the floor deformation caused by temperature changes.

At present, there are three types of SPC floor on the market: single-layer SPC flooring with on-line lamination, AB structure with LVT and SPC and SPC composite floor with ABA structure. The figure below shows the structure of single-layer SPC floor.

While digital imaging has improved across the board, the look and feel of each plank will be very different. An SPC vinyl will have a realistic look, possible texture and a denser feel. A traditional vinyl may have a realistic look, but they tend to be less advanced than an SPC vinyl.

You can find traditional LVT planks with a glue down, loose lay or click lock installation. The SPC vinyls on the market will be a floating click lock, tongue and groove system that is DIY friendly.

Dent Resistance

Traditional LVT floors are soft and pliable, which means heavy furniture can easily dent the material. A SPC vinyl will be more resilient when it comes to dents and abuse. It is a great option for commercial settings due to this reason.

SPC vinyl is one of the more affordable options in the rigid core category, however, it will generally still be more expensive than a traditional LVT flooring.

The main components of LVT flooring: PVC resin, stone powder, plasticizer, stabilizer, lubricant, modifier, carbon black, etc.

The main components of SPC flooring: the same PVC floor products, the main types of raw materials are basically the same, different from LVT floor, SPC floor substrate in the production process added lubricant, in order to more smoothly complete extrusion.

Production Process

LVT flooring production process: the biggest feature of its production process is the production of each layer of LVT sheet, which is generally processed into 0.8 ~ 1.5mm thick sheet by "internal mixing + calendering" method, and then made into the required thickness of the finished floor product by assembling and hot pressing.

SPC flooring production process: similar to WPC floor base material, SPC base material is extruded and calendered into sheet board by extruder, and then pasted with color film and wear-resistant layer on the surface. If it is ab or ABA structure of SPC composite flooring, the SPC base material is extruded first, and then the LVT layer is pressed and pasted by the way of green combination.
